SPICE NYC HOSTS CHARITY EVENT FOR CYNDI LAUPER’S TRUE COLORS RESIDENCE.
SPICE NYC will be hosting a charity event in celebration of their company's two year anniversary. Proceeds of the event are to benefit Cyndi Lauper's True Colors Residence. An eclectic group of artists will be donating their time to perform for the charity. Not only are the artists contributing in funding the residence, but they are also raising awareness of the growing population of LGBT homelessness.
New York, New York--Friday, September 10th 2010-SPICE NYC will be hosting a charity event at the venue Soirée (formerly Crash Mansion) located at 199 Bowery, NYC. The event will be commencing at 9:30 pm and running until 4:00 am. In celebration of SPICE NYC's two year anniversary, the events company will be hosting a charity event where proceeds are to benefit Cyndi Lauper's True Colors Residence. The True Colors Residence, an innovative project of West End Intergenerational Residence HDFC, Inc. , partners Grammy-Award winning artist Cyndi Lauper and her manager Lisa Barbaris, will provide New York's first permanent housing with support services for LGBT youth of ages 18-24 with a history of homelessness. The True Colors Residence is slated to open in Central Harlem, NYC in 2011. In attempts to raise awareness for the staggering increase of homelessness among the LGBT youth, independent Pop artist SandFlower Dyson, female MC Eyeris, and solo artist Breedlove will all be performing at the charity event for the patrons of SPICE NYC. MTV & Music Choice Network DJ Rob Dinero will be spinning a wide range of music, from pop and electro funk to rock and roll. This event is open to the public.

MIAMI BEACH 25/7 WOWS NEW YORKERS AT NY PRIDE PARADE
MIAMI BEACH – The City of Miami Beach showcased its rainbow pride and support of the LGBT community as a sponsor of the recent New York Pride Parade & Festival held on June 27 in New York City. More than 1.5 million parade spectators from all walks of life were exposed to the "Miami Beach Proud 25/7" message, communicating that Miami Beach is so proud, LGBT visitors need an extra hour in the day to fully experience the diversity and accepting attitude of this world-class destination.
The parade commenced with a "step-off" at 39th Street and Fifth Ave and finished at 9th Street and Greenwich Street. Divas Miss Elaine Lancaster and Lauren Foster led the Miami Beach street team, waving from a vintage butter cup yellow Rolls Royce Corniche convertible. Also representing Miami Beach were Commissioners Jerry Libbin and Michael Gongora with street team dancers passing out fans to help cool off spectators in the summer heat as well as sunscreen sprays and temporary tattoos. New Yorkers could be seen from Harlem to Battery Park with the colorful "Miami Beach Proud 25/7" fans and cheering "Miami Beach" as the car and team rolled by.
"Miami Beach has long been a city of diversity and acceptance for the LGBT community," said City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez. "Beyond being an unparalleled vacation destination, Miami Beach is a city of pride and we look forward to continuing to welcome our LGBT visitors from the Northeast to our dynamic and diverse city."
Along with parade and festival participation, the City invited spectators and fans to share their favorite "Proud 25/7 moment" with a Facebook photo contest where the winner will receive a two-night stay and spa treatments from the Shore Club. FEDERAL MONEY TO GO TO VERMONT LGBTQ YOUTH GROUP’S ANTI-BULLYING CAMPAIGN
There is an old truism to politics that what is pork to you is necessary spending to me. It is the same with earmarks. Basically, people love pork and earmarks if they are flowing into their state, but hate them if they are flowing into someone else's. Representative Peter Welch of Vermont secured some twenty-nine earmarks for Vermont, which is quite low to be honest. One of those earmarks is going to Outright Vermont, a Burlington-based queer youth advocacy organization. It is the first time that any Vermont LGBT group has been given a federal earmark. Cowan, with his fellow filmmakers, experienced first-hand what it was like to grow up gay in Utah in the Mormon faith, then turned their attention to the historic campaign by the Mormon Church to pass Proposition 8 in California believing that it was the cornerstone of an ideology that has worked for decades "to damage gay people and their causes." The film is their emotional outcry to what they found.

VANDALS TEAR DOWN OHIO’S FIRST GAY HISTORIC MARKER
Police are searching for vandals who tore down the only Ohio historical marker for a gay or lesbian person.
The marker recognizing Natalie Barney was knocked down in Cooper Park some time before Wednesday, July 7, said John Gantt, executive director of the Greater Dayton LGBT Center. The park is next to the downtown Dayton Metro Library.
"A friend noticed it had been torn down and told me about it," Gantt said. "I called police and they came and took a report."
Barney was a literary patron and lesbian author who was born in Dayton in 1876, but lived most of her life in Paris.

NY SENATE MAJORITY EXTENDS RIGHTS TO LGBT COUPLES
Legislation grants bereavement leave to employees in same-sex relationships
(Albany, NY) The Senate Democratic Majority passed legislation (S6177A/Montgomery) that allows individuals involved in same-sex relationships to be granted funeral or bereavement leave from their place of employment.
The bill, spearheaded by Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn), extends this privilege that was previously granted only to employees that are married, adding a section to the civil rights law that prohibits its employers from discriminating in the granting of funeral or bereavement leave to its employees who are in a "committed," same-sex relationship. A "committed" relationship is defined as a long-term relationship characterized by emotional and financial commitment and interdependence. It also orders the granted leave to be extended on the same basis as if offered to married employees.
It passed 50-11; this legislation has also passed the Assembly.
"This bill recognizes the fact that love, loyalty and dedication are the cornerstone of any committed relationship regardless of a person's sexual orientation. It does not require that preferential treatment be given to employees in same-sex relationships. It merely provides that bereavement leave be granted to individuals involved in same-sex relationships on the same basis as those granted to employees who are married," said Senator Montgomery, who is also a sponsor of the marriage equality bill authored by Senator Thomas Duane (D-Manhattan).
For many years, individuals in same-sex relationships who are barred from civil marriage were often not granted bereavement leave to attend the funeral of their partner or partner's family. This fails to recognize the significance that any committed relationship has, and the value that committed relationships contribute to our communities.
Senate Democratic Majority Conference Leader John L. Sampson said, "Same-sex individuals have been barred from civil marriage, and for far too long those couples have been refused the opportunity to have bereavement leave like their married counterparts. I commend this legislation's compassionate efforts to allow same-sex couples the chance to console each other in times of mourning."
Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D/WF-35th District) said, "I was devastated when my husband died in 2007. Somehow I can't believe that a loss of that magnitude feels any less painful based on sexual orientation. I support this legislation because the grieving process should be respected for everyone."
Senator Neil Breslin (D-Albany) said, "Many couples throughout the state are involved in committed relationships of financial and emotional interdependence. It is more than appropriate for those couples to be able to give emotional support to their partner in times of grief and heartache. A number of more open-minded companies with domestic partnership policies now allow bereavement leave for same-sex couples, and I applaud this legislation that opens up this benefit to all same-sex couples."

O'DONNELL INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO ALLOW SAME-SEX MARRIED COUPLES TO FILE JOINT TAX RETURNS
Assembly Member Daniel O'Donnell has introduced legislation (A.11479) which would amend the state's tax law to authorize New York to recognize marriages from other jurisdictions for personal income tax purposes. SLDN ISSUES VIRGINIA ACTION ALERT HOLDING SEN. JIM WEBB ACCOUNTABLE FOR VOTE AGAINST REPEAL
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), a national, legal services and policy organization dedicated to ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT), issued a Virginia action alert today to members and supporters urging them to write letters to the editor and opinion pieces holding Sen. Jim Webb accountable for his Senate Armed Services Committee vote against repeal on May 27. An amendment to allow for the repeal of DADT was successfully attached in committee to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2011. The bill is expected to reach the Senate floor for a vote later this month or July.
"We hope that Virginians will not give Senator Jim Webb a pass on his vote in the Senate Armed Services Committee to keep 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' on the books," said Aubrey Sarvis, executive director for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. "His vote was against equality, and fair-minded Virginians should take loud and strong exception. It is our hope that Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia will do the right thing when the defense bill is debated and voted on the Senate floor."

Webb was the only Democrat on the Committee to vote against the path to repeal and in doing so threatened his legacy. Now, we must hold him accountable.
SLDN is working to drive letters and opinion pieces into the media, and working with our coalition partners and local groups to make sure Senator Webb knows his vote was on the wrong side of history.

• Repeal is moving forward with the support of the President and the Pentagon, including JCS Chairman Admiral Michael Mullen and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.
• The repeal provisions in the amendment allowed for Congress to act while respecting the ongoing work by the Pentagon on how to implement open service for lesbian and gay service members. Nothing would happen until the Pentagon Working Group completes its report and the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the President certifies repeal.
• Congress and the Pentagon need to stay on track to get repeal finalized, hopefully no later than first quarter 2011.

GOVERNOR STRICKLAND DECLARES JUNE “LIVE WITH PRIDE, WITHOUT TOBACCO” MONTH
Governor Ted Strickland has declared June "Live with Pride, Without Tobacco Month" in an effort to provide a spotlight on the increase in tobacco use among Ohio's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth community. The proclamation coincides with the national "LGBT Pride Month," which kicks off a series of LGBT Pride Festivals around the U.S, including here in Columbus June 18-20.
According to the American Lung Association, today in the United States, approximately 4.5 million adolescents smoke. And with every second that passes, 14 more Americans under the age of 18 have started smoking – adding up to nearly 6,000 each day. Of those, 2,000 become regular smokers over the course of their lifetime.
The LGBT population has a higher smoking rate than any other minority population. While 28 percent of straight youth self-identify as smokers, nearly twice as many (59 percent) of LGBT youth classify themselves as smokers, according to the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco.
In Northeast Ohio alone, more than 80 percent of LGBT youth self-identify as smokers, according to the 2010 ButtOut Ohio LGBT Youth and Tobacco survey.

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. ELECTS THIRD GAY MAYOR IN A ROW
The city of Cambridge, Mass., home to Harvard University, has its third openly gay mayor…in a row. Mayor David Maher, who was elected to the post by his city council colleagues in February, acknowledged publicly this weekend he is gay. > Full Story. [6/15/10]

AWARD-WINNING COUNTRY ARTIST, CHELY WRIGHT, TO PERFORM AT THE 2010 MICHIGAN PRIDE DIVERSITY FESTIVAL
The 2010 Michigan Pride Diversity Festival will welcome country artist Chely Wright to the Mainstage on June 12 at Burchard Park, Monique Goch, Outreach Director of Michigan Pride, announced that Wright will also be featured as the Grand Marshal of the Michigan Pride March and is to perform at the Capitol earlier in the day in downtown Lansing.
Wright, whose hits include chart-toppers "Single White Female" and "Shut Up and Drive," has recently launched her seventh album, "Lifted Off the Ground," which coincided with the release of her autobiography, "Like Me: Confessions of a Heartland Country Singer." Wright appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to discuss her recent public "coming out" as a lesbian. She will also appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Thursday, May 27, 2010.
The performance is made possible by Michigan Pride, Equality Michigan, and Lansing Association for Human Rights (LAHR), along with other private donors.
