RHODE ISLAND GOVERNOR VETOS TRANSGENDER PROTECTIONS
On 23 June, Rhode Island Governor Don Carcieri vetoed legislation which would have protected transpeople from harassment and violence. Carcieri vetoed House Bill 7044/Senate Bill 2055 on the grounds that the hate crime statues of Rhode Island already covered "motivated by racial, religious, sexual orientation, gender or disability prejudice," so why cover anyone else like the transpeople?
